Noble but unrealistic.(none / 0) (#1)
by Jordan on Wed Feb 14, 2007 at 02:47:48 AM EST

Of course your intentions are noble.

But I don't think Israel can negotiate with Hamas until they reject their Charter calling for the destruction of Israel in the name of Islam and the killing the Jews until Judgement day.

Its debatable whether or not Israel should ignore this in hopes a deal can be reached. But from Israel's perspective, its not reasonable for the world to expect the Jews to negotiate with a group openly calling for their genocide.

Granted, Israel missed a HUGE opportunity to negotiate with Mahmood Abbas, a good man, after Arafat died. That was a mistake. But even so, its still too much to ask Jews to negotiate with Hamas. Its like asking America to negotiate with Al-Qaeda.

Your 'good man' is a holocaust denier.

Two things...

1. Abbas has abandoned those views and owned up to it.

2. I said "good man", not "great man". A certain amount of accommodation has to be given considering the political situation he is placed in. He must earn the confidence of the Palestinian people.

Point is, he is no Arafat who was a corrupt terrorist thug who was happy to see his people live in poverty as his wife lived off millions of UN humanitarian aid.

Abbas is as good as its going to get. But as "good" as he is, he cannot crack down on the terrorists. That would mean civil war and he knows it.

Oil and Israel(none / 0) (#4)

Its like asking America to negotiate with Al-Qaeda.

Surprise! UNOCAL Brought the Taliban over to Texas for a posh pow-wow.

Neocons have no standards. Any and all hypocrisies.

It is appropriate. The war on Terror was lost in the mountains of Tora Bora when we stopped pursuing Bin Laden.

What's left? Oil and Israel. We have no business in Iraq and we have no business in Iran. Why are we there? Because we have some neocon nimrods who think any cost to America is worth propping up that troublesome little country and while we're at it, why not steal tax money from working Americans and oil from the region.

This will be one for the history book. One of the worst acts of blatant criminal acts and traitorism to have occured in American history.

And the American people unfortunately let it happen. It is a permanent sh!t stain to wear like a badge.

Thanks Neocon criminals.

Bad or worse(none / 0) (#7)
by Jordan on Wed Feb 14, 2007 at 07:39:38 AM EST

First, I hope CounterPunch is not your primary source. Not even Daily Kos or Huffington Post will blogroll those extremests. Stormfront does however.

But assuming America does want to make a deal with the Taliban (not Al-Qaeda), you could make the case that its the best you are going to do in an world where the rules of engagement ensure the Taliban's survival.

The Taliban is local tyranny. They kill girls for trying to learn how to read, they destroy ancient Buddhist Statues, and they make life hell for all they rule over. It is a FAR more desperate situation than Gaza.

The idea of letting them off the hook makes me sick, but to defeat them would mean going back to WWII tactics which is no longer acceptable.

Its not a fair world, you have to choose between bad and worse. But to blame anyone besides the Taliban is to treat them as children, as sub-human.

The stink of this post won't wash(none / 0) (#8)
by dmz on Wed Feb 14, 2007 at 07:48:15 AM EST

Truth is my primary source. Counterpunch was convenient but you can find the same story in the BBC or Texas papers for that matter.

But that isn't important here.

If you want a better example of spin and hype, read this:

The idea of letting them off the hook makes me sick, but to defeat them would mean going back to WWII tactics which is no longer acceptable.

Its not a fair world, you have to choose between bad and worse.

These people are isolated in camps in mountains. You go in, sacrafice and take them out. Think Iwo Jima. Honest work. I think Murtha would be on board. What patriot wouldn't be?

To switch the war to Iraq and Iran? That is BS and we ALL know it. Bush Administration is not fighting the Taliban because it does not achieve the "MAIN OBJECTIVES" previously mentioned.
