Anti-Madrassa Anti-Talibat Protest in Pakistan

Hundreds of human rights activists in Islamabad came out to protest against the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, a women's madrassa.

About 600 people demanded curbs on "extremist forces" they said were promoting "intolerance and violence".

Last week female students from a madrassa in Islamabad abducted a woman they accused of running a brothel, holding her captive for two days.

The students said Islamic law gave them the right to stop immoral activity.

The students, from the Jamia Hafsa madrassa, seized the alleged brothel owner and two of her relatives, releasing them only when the woman had read out a confession.

Human rights campaigners said students from the madrassa were "harassing and terrorising ordinary citizens of Pakistan in the name of Islam", AFP news agency reported.

Jamia Hafsa is a madrassa for women (thus "Talibat" rather than "Taliban"), and damn are they fundo. Clad in big black burqas, they seem to be extremely obsessed with extremely self-flaggelating prayers to God. Here is a Youtube video of one of their rallies. I'm glad to see Pakistanis getting upset with Hafsa's victimization complex. I'm not going to sit here and translate the Urdu, but the basic gist is: God, we are defensless and weak, so please take actions against "them" (apparently the word "them" covers all of Hafsa's enemies). Yeah Talibat, real defenseless, when you can beat up old ladies and make them read pre-planned confessions.

That kid the video shows with the headband around his head, the headband says: Shariah or Martyrdom. That is sick.

The speaker's basic argument is that since Pakistan was "founded for Islam" why doesn't Pakistan apply Islamic Law? Well, genius, for starters, Pakistan was founded as a nation for "Muslims" but there was no guarantee or movement that it would be run under Islamic Law. Those founders of the country understood this one little concept, that a Muslim can live quite happily under a non-Shariah system. In fact, the word "God" didn't even make it into the Pakistani constitution until 1956, almost eight years after the founding of the country. For God's sake, Jinnah, the founder of the nation, was an Ismaili Khoja (a group of people whom these Talibat would kill for being a heretic).

So, what is the solution to these Muslim Ninjas?

Let there be elections:

Islamic parties have never garnered more than 13 percent in any free parliamentary elections in Pakistan.

Pakistan produces the most internet searches for the world's pornography. You really think all those guys would let a bunch of ninjas impose Islamic Law? Problem with the porno Pakistanis is that they don't come out and protest.

That is left for the human rights activists, who have to protest not just against the fundo ninjas, but also against the tyrant

Apparently they are getting ready to set up a Shariat court at Lal Masjid, which they will announce today. They have just appointed 10 judges.

“If the madrasa administration gets any information about any person indulging in un-Islamic activities, they will be warned through a letter to mend their ways. And if they refuse to heed our letter, the Shariat court will register a case against them and take appropriate action,” said Aziz.

They must be completely oblivious to the hundreds of protestors outside. Not to mention that this is totally Islamically unacceptable. And could the Pakistani govt prove themselves to be more impotent? I think not.

they are getting crazier

The Lal Masjid prayer leader gave the government a month’s deadline to close brothels and gambling dens and the sale and purchase of liquor in Islamabad. He said the government must remove all hoardings with “obscene” images and immediately stop the propaganda campaign against the madrassa students and administration.

Aziz said that if the government planned action against the madrassas as a “last option”, the madrassa students would resort to suicide attacks as “their last option”. He said that the madrassa students aimed at eliminating all un-Islamic practices. “We will provide relief to all those suffering in Pakistan,” said Aziz.

“The poor are unable to pay electricity bills...women are being raped...children are being kidnapped for ransom…innocent people are being murdered…the only solution to these issues is in Islam,” he said, claiming that approximately 500,000 brothels were operating in the country and no person had objected to this “immoral activity”.

so let me see if i have this straight - they will provide relief to all those that are suffering in Pakistan by KILLING THEM?? I see a desi Waco in the works. Unbelievable.

which is the appropriate response here? could this all be an elaborate ruse to satisfy maulana sahib's fantasies? can someone (ali?) provide him with internet access and passwords to certain key sites so we can call it a day?

MARRIAGE PROPOSAL: Maulana Aziz said that a ‘special centre’ had been set up in Madressah Hafsa titled ‘Taibaat Abidaat Centre’ to provide shelter to women who would voluntarily give up their ‘immoral activities’. He said these women would be provided ‘security and protection’ through ‘marriages’. Maulana Aziz announced that he would marry any woman who repented and gave up her immoral life. “I am now 46 years old and am ready to marry a woman who is between 35 to 40 years of age. If she promises to live a life of piety, I promise that I will never refer about her past life,” Maulana Aziz announced.
